Trump is griping he should win the Nobel for settling eight wars, which he hasn't done
Daniel Dale · October 10, 2026
CNN and many others have repeatedly noted the big problem with his list: it includes two wars that didn't happen at all and three wars that either never ended or have resumed.

The central claim doesn't hold.
Confidence score: 3/10 — Five of eight items fail on the record; three are defensible but debated.

“I settled 8 WARS, am close to ending or settling 2 more”
Of the eight conflicts on Trump's list, two were never wars, and three either never ended or have resumed, CNN found. Three, Armenia–Azerbaijan, Thailand–Cambodia and India–Pakistan, give him a real if debated claim.

This verdict partly aligns with the primary source, U.S. Department of State: A real US-brokered agreement, but its preamble notes the M23 rebels were negotiating separately under Qatar's mediation.
01
The claim
After the Nobel Peace Prize went to Navi Pillay, Trump wrote: "I settled 8 WARS, am close to ending or settling 2 more." At a rally the night before he cited "the eight wars that I've already settled."
02
Two that weren't wars
CNN notes that "Egypt and Ethiopia didn't fight any war" over the Ethiopian dam, and that Kosovo and Serbia "were not at war during his presidency."
03
Three that didn't stay settled
CNN reports that fighting involving Rwanda and the DRC "has not ended," that Israel "has continued to conduct frequent attacks in Gaza" since the October 2025 ceasefire, and that the Israel–Iran item lost force when the US and Israel went to war with Iran in February 2026.
04
Three with a real case
CNN calls three items "more solid": Armenia–Azerbaijan, whose leaders credited Trump; Thailand–Cambodia, where some experts credit him with a July 2025 ceasefire, though CNN notes the clashes "flared up again in December before another truce"; and India–Pakistan, where Pakistan's prime minister credits him. India's foreign ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, said in May 2025 that during the conflict "there were conversations between Indian and US leaders on the evolving military situation. The issue of trade did not come up in any of these discussions."
05
The left-leaning framing
CNN called the eight-war list "not actually a list of eight settled wars," saying "five of the items on Trump's eight-item list are either total nonsense or clearly flawed."
06
The right-leaning framing
Fox News reported Trump's post in full and his nominations for the prize, describing it as "a long list of accomplishments." It did not test the eight-war count.
07
Why it's mostly false
At most three of the eight have a real claim to be settled with Trump's help, and even those are debated. Counting disputes that never became wars, and wars still being fought, as settled turns a partial record into a false total.
08
The buried fact
The US-brokered DRC–Rwanda agreement says in its own preamble that it was signed "MINDFUL of the negotiations underway between DRC and AFC/M23 under the mediation of the State of Qatar in Doha." The main rebel group fighting in eastern Congo wasn't a party to the deal Trump counts as a settled war.
09
What each side gets right, and hides
CNN gives Trump credit on three items, which the 'five bogus' headline framing can obscure. Fox relays the eight-war claim without checking it, and leaves out that the Iran war Trump started is still going.
10
The question to ask
If a peace deal leaves out the side doing most of the fighting, what exactly was settled?

Caveats and limits
Caveats
- Which eight conflicts Trump means has varied slightly over time; this story uses the list CNN reviewed from his Oct. 9 speech.
- How much credit Trump deserves for the three stronger items is a judgment call, not a matter of record.
